I am a molecular endocrinologist and aquatic ecotoxicologist with an interest in the effects of endocrine active chemicals on aquatic wildlife. I am also active in research to protect humans from diseases associated with exposure to biological contaminants in freshwater, including legionella (pathogenic bacteria) and schistosomiasis (parasitic disease) - see my grants for more details. I have published over 30 papers that have been collectively cited over 5500 times. I am programme leader for the Masters in Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Design which aims to provide entrepreneurial students with the skills and mind-set to help build a sustainable future; one that is environmentally responsible and socially inclusive. I teach a number of subjects at Masters level, including Ecology, Sustainability, and Toxicology (Endocrine Disruption). Research Projects: I have a broad background in ecotoxicology research through the use of in vitro and in vivo (mammalian and aquatic) test systems for environmental estrogens, studies into quantitative structure activity relationships of alkylphenolic chemicals, the application of solid-phase extraction techniques for analysing complex environmental samples, and studies into the molecular mechanisms of estrogen receptor action, to name a few. My present research interests include the application of freshwater mollusc species in environmental monitoring and regulatory testing of chemicals, fundamental research on the molecular endocrinology of freshwater molluscs and the effect of pollution on parasite-host interactions. Recent awards involving SMEs and from industry have a strong focus around water quality issues, from the health effects of consuming direct potable reuse water, validation of the efficacy of a novel device to kill pathogenic bacteria in hot water systems, and the development of ballast water treatment systems to prevent the spread of invasive species in aquatic ecosystems.

My research interests can be divided into the following areas: 1. Ecotoxicology: The effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on freshwater wildlife (fish and molluscs), including the effects of chemical pollutants on parasite host interactions. New and emerging contaminants (e.g. microplastics). 2. Animal Welfare and Regulatory Testing: The use of molluscs as replacements to vertebrates in regulatory chemical testing strategies. Includes fundamental biology research. 3. Technological interventions and Health: The prevention and control of pathogenic bacteria (Legionella) in domestic water systems. 4. Neglected Tropical Diseases: Developing novel approaches to control the transmission of schistosomiasis in humans. 6. Fresh water sustainability: The potential health effects of indirect potable reuse water (advanced treatment technologies) being developed to help meet societies’ demand for drinking water.

I obtained a PhD in Environmental Science from The University of New South Wales in 1995 (thesis was submitted for examination in 1994). Before joining University of Salford, I held senior academic positions at University of Southern Queensland and South China Agricultural University. Earlier academic appointments were with Southern Cross University, The University of New South Wales and South China Normal University. I also worked as a professional environmental consultant with a global consulting company (Brisbane Office, Golder Associates) during the period from 2005 to 2009. I am an Associate Editor for Journal of Environmental Management (Elsevier; impact factor: 4.010) with direct responsibility for making final decision on manuscripts (over 110 manuscripts per year). TEACHING I have teaching interests in environmental science, environmental management, environmental chemistry, environmental impact assessment, environmental technology, soil science and restoration ecology.

I have a broad range of research interests in environmental sciences with a particular focus on environmental issues related to acid sulfate weathering in mine areas (acid mine drainage) and coastal lowlands (acid sulfate soils). More recently, much effort has been made to develop cost-effective technologies for remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soils with a special reference to the Kuwait oil lake areas, an environmental legacy of the first Gulf War. Other research interests include chemical behaviour of heavy metals and pesticides in water-soil-plant systems, characterization and treatment of industrial wastes, ecotoxicology, soil carbon sequestration, climate change adaptation, and payment for environmental services (PES).

Manuela Marcoli has completed her M.D. degree at the age of 24 years from Pavia University, Italy (PhD. Degree in Clinical Pharmacology from Pavia University, Italy). She is professor of Pharmacology at the University of Genova, Italy. She has over 85 publications that have been cited over 1300 times, and her publication H-index is 22 and has been serving as a reviewer of reputed Journals

The common molecular mechanisms shared by addiction and memory processes; the neurobiological mechanisms of drug dependence (the influence of endocannabinoid system, calcium homeostasis and kinases/phosphatases balance) and further strategies for its pharmacotherapy.

Her research interests include: the regulation and suppression of human UGTs and their role as anti-proliferative agents in cancer models, the interactions between UGTs and cannabinoid receptors, the delivery of UGT genes and drugs into cancer cells using nanomaterials, and the roles of UGTs in the biotransformation of drugs including resveratrols and drugs of abuse such as marijuana and synthetic cannabinoids.

Expertise in the study of natural products from medicinal plants and lichens as neuroprotective agents, based on their antioxidant properties, against different models of oxidative stress in cell lines of the nervous system (neurons and astrocytes). Author of many scientific publications (25 in indexed journals, 4 in non-indexed journals and 9 chapters of books) as well as communications in national and international congresses. I have participated as researcher in four National funded projects and research stays at prestigious international centers (King’s College of London and Neuroscience Center in Coimbra). Teaching experience at all levels of higher education in Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacognosy subjects as well as experience in Educational Innovative Projects.

He was born in the city of Jiquilpan, Michoacán, Mexico.He studied a degree in medicine at the Michoacán University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH). He obtained training to be a professor in Pharmacology and Toxicology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He obtained the postgraduate degree of Expert and International Master in Toxicology at the Illustrious Official School of Chemists of Seville, Spain.He participated in the following FAO courses: "International Code of Conduct for Pesticide Management" and "International Code of Conduct for Pesticide Distribution and Storage". He is a member of the Spanish Association of Toxicology (AETOX) and the European Association of Toxicology (EUROTOX).In addition, he is also a member of the following groups: EHSQ Elite (No.1 IN SAFETY) Enviromental Health Safety Sustainability Security Elite, Regulatory Toxicology Group, Society of Cosmetic Scientists-SCS Group, EUSAAT- EUROPEAN SOCIETY FOR ALTERNATIVES TO ANIMAL TESTING, Eurotox 2017, REACH, CLP and Biocides Regulations and Genetic Literacy Project. He has participated as an organizer and speaker of courses and conferences in the region and in the State.He currently works as a consultant and altruistic consultant in the two universities of the state and in the ecology council of the state (COEECO), which is the only one in the country.
